Berlin Wall

From 1961 to 1989, a wall separated Berlin, with Russians in control of the east. The wall proved difficult to scale, with its smooth round coping. A wide area behind the wall, known as the “death strip” might contain beds of nails and remained bare so guards could spot people. Vehicles could not traverse the strip because of trenches and loose ground.

Checkpoint Charlie

Nine border crossings existed between West and East Berlin. The remains of one of those crossings, Checkpoint Charlie, stands as a tourist attraction. I even picked up a Checkpoint Charlie Hard Rock Cafe magnet from the Rock Shop.
