Trabant

East German manufacturer VEB Sachsenring produced four models of the Trabi from 1957 until 1991. These front-wheel drive cars contained a two-stroke engine and featured detachable plastic body panels on a steel unibody frame. Coined “a spark plug with a roof”, more than three million ended up built and have quite a following of collectors.

Even with so many manufactured, the demand to production ratio topped 40:1 and people routinely waited ten years for a car after paying for one. With a 0-to-60 timing north of 20 seconds, these did not have much get-up-and-go. They also topped out in the low 60s mph.

Seriously though, driving around Berlin in a “different” kind of car, you should listen to music in an unconventional way. Philips produced the Auto Mignon between 1958 and 1969, for people to enjoy listening to records while driving. I spotted one in a Berlin car museum.
