Flying Foxes

Founded as a penal settlement in the early 19th century, Port Mac now has over 50,000 free residents. And, more than 250,000 flying foxes! The black dots in the sky in the picture below shows bunches of fruit bats flying. At dusk, they fly from their colonies to feed. These animals can have a wingspan exceeding three feet!

An Old-ish Lighthouse

This lighthouse did not make it onto Australia’s top ten oldest. The cute little lighthouse at Tacking Point comes in at number thirteen.

It does look out on a nice view of the ocean.

The view from our hotel room wasn’t bad, by comparison. The Rydges Hotel ended up pretty well located for us to enjoy Port Mac’s lively downtown.

A Walk By The River

The Hastings River has a paved walkway on the Port Mac side. People have painted some of the rocks over the years.
